While the affordability and quality of Satellite’s housing are crucial to the well-being of our residents, they are not enough. In order for our seniors to live as independently as possible and to age in place, they need access to social services on-site. Accordingly, every building has its own service coordinator who is dedicated to building relationships with residents and coordinating the services they most need.
Due to our residents’ often-limited mobility, transportation is our most popular service.
In addition to the transportation provided to the agencies’ residents in Oakland, Berkeley, and Walnut Creek, Satellite also runs the Newark Paratransit program; providing rides for seniors and disabled adults throughout the entire city of Newark.
Service Coordinators research what services are available in the local community and bring those services home to their buildings, so that residents can take exercise or art classes, attend workshops, or get answers to health questions on-site. These services improve our residents’ quality of life, create strong communities, and offer opportunities to catch physical and mental health issues early.
Satellite Housing Resident Services offers one-on-one case management for disabled residents. We collaborate with local service providers to link residents with home and community-based resources that improve their quality of life. Through our resident services, we prevent or delay the institutionalization of elderly and disabled residents by providing non-medical in-home services. The Resident Service Coordinator educates residents on available services and encourages residents to be proactive in meeting their social, psychological, and physical needs.
The Service Coordinators offer a wide variety of opportunities for socialization on-site such as weekly teas, art classes, and regular holiday celebrations. Several sites have hosted their own art galleries with big crowds in attendance on opening day.
Our Activities Coordinator has established a monthly wellness topic presentation to be used thought Satellite’s portfolio. It focuses on one topic a month of interest to residents and their health. Service Coordinators bring in speakers, distribute materials, etc. throughout the month.
