Get Involved at Satellite Housing: Volunteer!
Having a good quality and affordable place to live is a basic necessity. But there is more to a high quality life than housing. People, especially seniors, need social connections, outlets for creative expression and opportunities for healthy living. Thus, Satellite Housing, with the help of the Americorps VISTA, recently launched its volunteer program with the goal of providing opportunities to improve the quality of life, promote health and well-being, and foster community among our senior residents.
Are you looking for a rewarding way to share your passions? Are you interested in applying your skills while helping members of your community? Help Satellite Housing by sharing your interests and talents with our seniors. Volunteer at Satellite Housing and enrich our residents’ days with activities such as arts and crafts, bingo, exercise, ESL class, cooking, Wii video games, and more. You will help seniors exercise their minds and their bodies, and promote friendship and community!

Guidebook Aims to Reduce Social Isolation
Satellite is proud to announce the publication of Reach Out! Preventing and Alleviating Social Isolation in Seniors- for Providers of Affordable Housing. The guidebook demonstrates the deeply injurious affects social isolation can have in seniors and concrete ways to combat it. While it is primarily written for Resident Service Coordinators, it can easily be adapted for any organization or individual who works with seniors.
Reach Out! is the culmination of a year and a half of academic and on-the-ground research from Satellite’s Director of Resident Services and a team of VISTA volunteers. Patrick Arbore of the Institute on Aging says of the guidebook, “Staff of Affordable Senior Housing will be able to utilize this material on a daily basis. Unlike a lot of manuals that collect dust, this guidebook is alive with helpful tips to enable the resident to live a life of possibilities as they age.”
If you’re interested in the guidebook, contact Satellite’s Director of Resident Services Patricia Osage at posage@satellitehousing.org or at 510-647-0700 ext. 119. A donation of $25 per copy to cover the costs of printing is welcomed. |
